Prabhas Raju Uppalapati (born 23 October 1979),[1] popularly known as Prabhas, is an Indian film actor working in Telugu cinema. He is notable for his roles in Varsham, Chatrapathi, Billa and Mirchi. The Hindustan Times writes that the film project Baahubali is the most expensive undertaking in the history of Indian cinema.[2] He is playing a dual role.

Early life[edit]
Prabhas was born to U. Suryanarayana Raju and Siva Kumari. His family is from Mogalturu village in West Godavari district, Andhra Pradesh. He is the youngest of three children, with an elder brother Pramod Uppalapati and sister Pragathi.[3] He is the nephew of Telugu actor Uppalapati Krishnam Raju.[4]
Early career[edit]
Prabhas started his movie career with Eshwar in 2002, opposite Sridevi Vijaykumar. In 2003, he was the lead in Raghavendra.
In 2004, he appeared in Varsham opposite Trisha. The film went on to win major awards including the Nandi Award for Best Female Playback Singer (K.S. Chitra - Nuvvostanante), Best Choreographer (Prabhu Deva) and Best Audiographer (Madhusudan Reddy). It bagged many awards in South Filmfare awards and Santhosham Film awards. The film had celebrated a 50-day run in 125 centres and a 100-day run in 68 centres. It grossed more than 18Cr at box office.[5]
He continued his career with Adavi Raamudu and Chakram.
Stardom[edit]
In September 2005 he acted in the film Chatrapathi directed by S. S. Rajamouli, in which he portrays the role of a refugee, exploited by goons. It had a 100-day run in 54 centers.[6] The film grossed ₹300 million (US$4.8 million) in 100 days and became the highest grossing Telugu film of 2005.[citation needed] Prabhas was praised for his ease in action sequences. Critics noted that there is a unique style and macho charm in his screen presence.[7]
Later he acted in Pournami' 'Yogi and Munna, an action-drama film came out in 2007, followed by the action-comedy Bujjigadu in 2008. In 2009 his two films were Billa and Ek Niranjan. Billa is a remake of the 2007 Tamil film of the same name. It also drew inspirations from the NTR-starring Telugu film, Yugandhar (1979) which drew inspirations from Amitabh Bachchan's Hindi film Don and Rajinikanth's 1980 Tamil film with the same title. Bills was commended as stylish and visually rich.[8]
2010-present[edit]
In 2010 he appeared in the romantic comedy Darling and in 2011, Mr. Perfect, another romantic comedy. In 2012, Prabhas starred in Rebel, an action film directed by Raghava Lawrence. His next film was Mirchi opposite Anushka Shetty and Richa Gangopadhyay. Mirchi opened strong and collected a nett gross of about ₹50 crore (US$7.9 million) in 100 days.[9] Prabhas became the fifth Tollywood hero to enter the 40cr club with this film.
He gave a friendly appearance in the Hindi film Action Jackson directed by Prabhudeva, dancing opposite Sonakshi Sinha. He rendered voice for a short cameo for the filmDenikaina Ready.[10]
He played the title role in the period film Baahubali directed by SS Rajamouli, for which he has beefed up his personality, learning horse riding to portray a king. The trailer, released on June 1 in 270 screens across AP and Telangana, garnered positive reviews.
He is referred to as 'Young Rebel star' in the entertainment press.[11] His use of "Darling" as a friendly catch-phrase in the movie Bujjigadu has become his signature and prominent among his fans.
