Early life[edit]
Grover was born in New Delhi, India on 23rd February 1982 to a Punjabi Sikh family.[5] He has one younger brother.[6] when Grover was of 2 years of age his family faced distress due the silkh riots in 1984.[7] When Grover was young his family moved to Al Khobar,Saudi Arabia. He did his schooling at International Indian School Dammam. In 2000, he moved to Mumbai, India, and pursued a degree in Hotel Management from IHM Mumbai, Dadar Catering College. He was also part of a band called the Thousand Decibels during his college days.[5] After completing his degree he worked as a Marketing Executive in the Sheraton Hotel in Oman.[5]
Career[edit]
In 2004 he pursued a career in modelling and participated in the Gladrags Manhunt Contestand won the award of the most popular model.[5] In 2013, Grover was featured at number 13 in Asia's top 50 Sexiest Men on the Planet list.[8][9][10] In 2014 he was featured at number 12 in Asia's top 50 Sexiest Man on Planet list.[11] He has been featured multiple times in Times Top 50 most desirable men list. In 2010, he was at number 24, 29 in 2011, 39 in 2012,[12] 18 in 2013,[13] and was listed number 19 in 2014.[14]Grover is also one of the highest paid Indian Television Actors.[15]
He began his television career with Balaji Telefilms' Kitni Mast Hai Zindagi on MTV India.[5][16] In 2007 Grover joined the cast of Dill Mill Gayye, a medical youth drama.[17] TheTimes of India reported that Grover became an "instant hit" and a "teenage icon" therefore making the show have the best ratings on the channel STAR One.[18] Whilst shooting for the show he also participated in a few reality shows, he hosted Zara Nachke Dikha,[16] contested and became a finalist in the dance reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa (season 3)[19] and also participated in Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi.[20] It was reported that Grover would routinely report hours late for the shoot of Dill Mill Gayye and that Cinevistaas Limited were planning to sue him to recover their losses.[21] Grover left the show for a while, but returned to the show after 6 months because of fans' demands.[22][23]The show ended on 29 October 2010.[24] Later he hosted a Channel V India show called Perfect Couple.[25] He also acted in two shows of Cinevistaas Limited; he featured in Teri Meri Love Stories,[26]and did a cameo in Dil Dosti Dance.[27] He was also seen in advertisements of Rupa Frontline, Cleartrip.com, Indian Gem & Jewellery and Kajaria tiles.[5]
On 29th October 2012, Grover returned to daily fiction with 4 Lions Films' Qubool Hai.[28][29] Grover was paid Rs. 20 lakhs per month because of his "formidable female fan base."[30]Due to Grover's presence, the show made a grand entry into Indian television. Times of india wrote that "Karan Singh Grover..is making his comeback on television after almost two years in a daily soap. And it is no mean feat for the broadcaster as they would want to give the best possible time SLOT to his show, Qubool Hai."[31]The show gained popularity pretty early becoming the number 2 show of Indian Television.[32] Grover won two Best Actor Awards for his portrayal of Asad Ahmed Khan.[33][34] Grover was mobbed by the crowd during outdoor shoots of the show, once in Bhopal,[35] and once in Rajasthan.[36]
Grover was also praised by his colleagues for his work in the Qubool Hai. Kratika Sengar stated "I think Karan is one of the finest actors on television currently and I would love to work with him in the future. I have met him on the sets and think that he is a very humble and down-to-earth as a person... He is doing a fantastic job in the show (Qubool Hai). I still remember that there was a maha episode...I liked the way he presented himself in that scene. He literally had tears in his eyes. He was that natural!"[37] Gautami Kapoor also stated that she feels Grover is currently the most popular television actor and that he is acting really well in the show.[38]
Grover's work at Qubool Hai ended at the end of 2013.[39]The channel, Zee TV, said that it had fired him because of his unprofessional behavior.[40][41] He denied the allegations, saying that the channel was trying to defame him, and stated that he left because his contract ended[42] and due to ill health.[43] Fans protested to bring Grover back on to the show.[44] Grover's exit caused a sizeable drop in the viewership figures of the show.[45]
In May 2014 Grover became a producer with 4 Lions Films.[46][47] He also started shooting for the Indian Film Alone which co-starred Bipasha Basu, and was directed byBhushan Patel, it released on January 16, 2015.[48][49] Business of Cinema reported that the trailer had two million hits on YouTube, becoming the #1 video in under 48 hours with a 95% "like" ratio.[50] Grover and Bipasha Basu promoted the movie at various places including Comedy Nights with Kapil.[51] Bollywood Hungama gave a positive review to Grover for the movie and stated that "Karan Singh Grover makes a sprightly debut. He's not conscious of the camera at all. Considering he has done TV, he is high on emotional appeal. He has all the trappings of being a star."[52] Times of India also reported that Grover "won rave reviews for his performance in the film.[53]He signed T-Series' Hate Story 3 in April 2015, it is set to release on 11 December 2015.[54]
Personal life[edit]
Grover married actress Shraddha Nigam on 2 December 2008. The marriage ended in divorce after 10 months.[2][55][56][57][58] Grover married Jennifer Winget, his costar and friend from Dill Mill Gayye and Kasautii Zindagii Kay, on 9 April 2012.[3][59][60] In November 2014 Winget stated that she and Grover had separated.[59][61]
Grover claims that he does not believe in any particular religion, however is spiritual.[62] Grover is a fitness enthusiast, and claims that exercise provides him inner peace.[63]Grover also loves to swim, sing and write. He also claims that he loves his Mother the most in the world.[64]
